Canadian blackened death metal project Unburnt recently announced the upcoming August 16th release of their four-song EP, Arcane Evolution. It is the follow up to the group’s 2016 debut single, “Harnessing Black Flame”.
Unlike many new bands struggling to find their sound early on, Unburnt consists of seasoned metal musicians spread throughout various parts of Canada desiring to create something new outside of what their individual projects play. Consisting of versatile vocalist Eric Burnt of Samskaras and ex-Derelict fame, guitarist Bo Louther and drummer Joe Mullen of the long-running Ontario-based melodic death outfit Odium, and rounded out by their newest member, bassist John-Ryan Godfrey of We Are Human.
Unburnt – Arcane Evolution is a scorching and eclectic slab of death metal with a bit of something for everyone between black metal influenced elements, heavy neck-snapping modern death metal underpinnings, infectious melodies, and driven by a perfect balance between driving riffs and spidery lead work. Inspired by bands such as The Black Dahlia Murder, Veil of Maya, Dimmu Borgir, and Whitechapel, Unburnt covers a wide range of sounds fused together in a memorable fashion all their own.
Today the band partnered with Everything Is Noise to premiere the first single from Arcane Evolution, “Sorrow-Bearing Enemy”.
Vocalist Eric Burnet (Samskaras) explains that “The sorrow-bearing enemy is a Buddhist concept. It represents the side of ourselves that relishes giving into our anger and negative impulses. It’s the part of us that laughs as we take the easiest path in a conflict and then look back on the ruin we’ve created. The song is about the every-day battle we all must engage in to be calm, peaceful, and rational in a chaotic world. It’s a celebration of that silent and invisible triumph that comes from overcoming your dark side. No one really notices that but you, but it’s one of the greatest victories you can experience.”
Everything Is Noise comments on the launch of “Sorrow-Bearing Enemy”
“Sorrow-Bearing Enemy” is tastefully fast-paced, and manages to balance old-school death metal elements with a more modern blackened death metal appeal. The production isn’t crystal-clear, but the band cleverly use that as an advantage to achieve an almost industrial yet gritty atmosphere. Unburnt‘s highest quality lies without a doubt within the band’s great feeling for pace. They know exactly when they have to slow down a bit and spotlight their groove, and when they have to accelerate things with their scourging riffs. All in all, this track makes hungry for more, and Arcane Evolution can’t come fast enough!”
