Portland, Oregon-based progressive death metal/progressive rock faction The Odious finally released their second full-length album, Vesica Piscis, last week on Friday, June 21st. It was the long-awaited follow up to their late-December 2012 debut album, Joint Ventures, a release that is revered in progressive metal circles even now. Prior to the release of Joint Ventures, the band captured the attention of the progressive metal world with their 2011 EP, That Night a Forest Grew.
This rare gift allows them to create stunning boundaryless progressive minded metal that transports the listener to a world all its own. Visionary eclectic artists such as Devin Townsend, Between The Buried And Me, and Mr. Bungle serve as a loose series of reference points to help cue the listener into the mercurial ever-shifting journey that is Vesica Piscis. Ever a hard to describe act, the band’s new album continues their established approach to boldly blurring the lines between progressive rock, progressive death metal, progressive metal, and more with ease.
Today the band partnered with Gear Gods to launch a guitar playthrough for their song “Arbiter of Taste”
Gear Gods comments on the playthrough premiere of “Arbiter of Taste”
“As a massive fan of bands like Between the Buried and Me, Native Construct, and Others by No One, The Odious have been on my radar since the release of their previous album Joint Ventures back in 2012. While I’ve loved everything from these dudes in the past, the new album brings a whole new level of refreshing sounds to the table, and Spencer’s playthrough showcases that beautifully.
With sections of the track ranging from tech-death to black metal to prog rock and everything in between, there’s a lot going on, but the band manages to make it all digestible. Spencer’s playing is on-point, even on the wackiest of riffs that this song has to offer, and at nearly 7 minutes, the song is fairly beefy but doesn’t drag for one second. And with a hooky chorus that makes an appearance throughout, “Arbiter of Taste” pretty much has everything you could ask for.”
