In just a few days on Friday, March 13th, Montreal-based progressive death metallers Sutrah will release their new 4-song ep, Aletheia, via The Artisan Era. It is the follow up to the group’s heavily praised 2017 debut album, Dunes.
Across four dense songs clocking in at just under the thirty-minute mark and the lengthy closing cut, “Genèse” surpassing the fifteen-minute mark, Aletheia makes quite clear this is not a stop-gap effort in-between better things to come. Aletheia is a cerebral and confident next step forward for Sutrah with much to take in inside of every song. Sutrah – Aletheia will strongly appeal to fans of Lykathea Aflame, Gorguts, and Nile.
Today the band partnered with Decibel Magazine to launch an early full stream of Aletheia ahead of it’s release on Friday via The Artisan Era.
Decibel Magazine comments on the full stream premiere of Aletheia
“It’d be easy to assume Sutrah are mere disciples of their Quebec tech-death brethren, but it’d be inaccurate. Sure, they draw from Gorguts and Cryptopsy on new EP Aletheia, but they’re also far more.
Two members play/perform with Chthe’ilist, who did their home province proud by bringing disgusting Finnish death into its borders. Sutrah do the same with influence from Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, where vocalist Laurent Bellemare went on a sabbatical. The band build on debut LP Dunes with the addition of a type of traditional Bali instrument gangsa. This band is truly progressive.
Despite only including four tracks, Aletheia clocks in at 28.5 minutes and feels like a journey. Much of this has to do with closer “Variation II.ii – Genèse,” which approaches 16 minutes and feels like an epic in and of itself.”
