Although Ols’ music often tends to be labelled as dark neofolk, the project bridges multiple styles and genres, such as folk, ambient music and atmospheric black metal. Thematically, Ols – a Polish word for the alder forest growing on swamps and marshes – explores the magical realms of misty forests and mysterious wetlands.
The mastermind and author of Ols‘ music and lyrics, Anna Maria Oskierko, explains:
“Widma” is a concept album about late autumn which in human life corresponds to old age. The songs throughout the album lead the listener through the stages of growing older and autumnal dying – from the first hoarfrost, the first gray hair, through to the arrival of November darkness, loneliness, madness, up to the coming of winter and death.
The most important theme of Ols’ work is nature in all its manifestations. The human is perceived as an integral part of this, with the human psyche a reflection of natural changes – the sequences of the seasons and the cycles of birth and death.
The new material is darker and more ambitious when compared to previous Ols recordings. Each song on the album is distinctive. It contains mesmerising lullabies, disquieting ritual chants, songs close to neofolk ballads, as well as fragments inspired by atmospheric black metal.”
