Louisiana death metal trio FAUSTIAN — featuring members of Barghest, Kavyk, and others — has premiered its self-titled debut EP on Invisible Oranges ahead of its release Friday via Black Lion Records.
Invisible Oranges Editor Jon Rosenthal writes, “FAUSTIAN‘s self-titled debut EP delves even further into death metal’s brawn and guitar acrobatics than Barghest‘s more bestial approach would ever allow. Though brief, Faustian is dense, relying on sophisticatedly interlocked riffs and blasting intensity to express a deeper discontent and rage.”
Recorded by James Whitten (Thou, High on Fire, Eyehategod), Faustian delivers a unique style of blackened death that seamlessly shifts from razor-sharp maelstrom to dirge-like grime as the three-piece meld violent urgency and claustrophobic atmosphere into a frenzied sonic catharsis.
The album’s haunting cover art is a 1870 painting from Polish artist Adam Chmielowski titled “Death and conflagration from the Disaster triptych.”
“What would eventually turn into FAUSTIAN began as a solo project during a particularly trying time, which permeates through each note of the release,” says guitarist/vocalist Dallas Smith. “The addition of Troy and Max transformed the initial ideas into succinct songs that effectively offer the first glimpse into a decidedly-unique form of death metal that is as visceral as it is technical.”
Faustian is being released Friday on CD and digital via Black Lion Records. More information regarding vinyl will appear at a later date.
