On January 10th, 2025 internationally, Nine to Zero Productions is proud to present Urfeind‘s highly anticipated third album, Dauþalaikaz, on CD format.
Founded in 2015 and led by vocalist / guitarist Skadwaz, Germany’s Urfeind have studiously crafted a brutal style of black metal grounded in intense thematic exploration. First came 2018’s Swartaz Dagana debut album and then Þurisabloþa two years later, both full-lengths establishing the band’s signature intensity by blending rugged soundscapes with depth and darkness. Thematically, both albums ushered forth a unique mix of Thursian themes (dark Germanic heathenism), misanthropy, and Anti-Cosmic Philosophy. In 2021, Urfeind released the Wraiþaz demo EP, intensifying those themes further.
Now, Urfeind are set to unleash their grand culmination of sound and thought with Dauþalaikaz. Those already familiar with the band will recognize that the four tracks featured on Wraiþaz have been re-recorded here with enhanced aggression and power, comprising the second half of Dauþalaikaz. But more than re-establishing Urfeind‘s not-inconsiderable strengths so far, Dauþalaikaz creates an all-enveloping headspace rife with rising & falling riffing – martial yet melodic, mesmerizing in every way – and propulsive battery that establishes movement and malice without over-reliance on blastbeating speed. Not to say that Dauþalaikaz isn’t without its up-tempo moments, but rather that Skadwaz’s focus is on strident songwriting: introduction of theme, extension of theme, pulverization of theme. As such, it’s not difficult to get caught within Urfeind‘s hypnotic slipstream; intensity is fully present, as equally as artistic growth. The album’s simplicity is tastefully subtle and extremely nuanced, its inexorable brutality belying the deep exploration of anti-cosmic perspectives and the shadows within.
While much of the modern German black metal sound either gravitates toward Dark Funeral-influenced overdrive or a Finnish-inherited sense of melodicism, Urfeind‘s particular brand of black metal harkens to other brutal-but-subtle outliers like Hate Forest, Arckanum, and Triumph, Genus – but Dauþalaikaz is undeniably a steel-toed step in their own direction. Uncompromising and as philosophically grounded as ever, the new dawn belongs to Urfeind!
