OCTOPLOID, fronted by bassist Olli-Pekka “Oppu” Laine (known for his work with AMORPHIS, BARREN EARTH, and MANNHAI), are wrapping up an eventful 2024 with the release of a brand-new lyric video for ‘Coast Of The Drowned Sailors.’ This year marked the release of their highly praised debut album, “Beyond The Aeons” (July 5, 2024 via RPM), as well as their first live performance.
Taken from the album featuring an impressive roster of prestigious guest musicians, ‘Coast Of The Drowned Sailors’ highlights vocals by none other than Laine‘s AMORPHIS bandmate, Tomi Koivusaari. Known for his iconic growls, Koivusaari lends his signature style to the track, creating a direct connection between OCTOPLOID and Laine‘s early musical roots. Complementing Koivusaari‘s leads, Jani “Joãnitor” Muurinen (XYSMA, ex-MANNHAI) contributes mellow clean vocals, adding depth and contrast. The album’s persistent psychedelic theme resonates throughout ‘Coast Of The Drowned Sailors,’ making it not only a fan favourite but also a perfect introduction for listeners new to the band’s 70s-inspired death prog metal sound.
Oppu states: “‘Coast Of The Drowned Sailors’ is a conscious nod to the 90s, and the only possible interpreter for it was Mr. Tomi Koivusaari. The track marries the essence of original melodic death metal with elements of slide and acoustic guitar characteristic of southern rock ballads. Also featured is Jani “Joãnitor” Muurinen, the legendary vocalist from the band XYSMA, who delivers the more hopeful part of the lyrics. Overall, ‘Sailors’ is an unapologetically old-school melodic death metal track executed with a modern touch!”

About OCTOPLOID
OCTOPLOID, the solo project of Olli-Pekka Laine (bassist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist, known for his work with AMORPHIS, BARREN EARTH, and MANNHAI), was established in 2022. This venture has culminated in “Beyond The Aeons,” the act’s debut album which was released on July 5, 2024 through Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM). OCTOPLOID‘s music merges elements of 90s death/black metal, 70s prog rock, and 90s psychedelic rock, carving a distinct niche in the music landscape. The sound of OCTOPLOID has aptly been described as “classic death prog.”
The band’s line-up is built around Laine and features three talented musicians. Mikko Pietinen, a versatile drummer with experience ranging from stoner rock with MANNHAI to Finnish mainstream pop rock (including bands like KASMIR), and Peter Salonen, a lead/rhythm guitarist known for his work with THE KINKY THING — a band that performs covers of Finnish psych rock legends KINGSTON WALL — is relatively new to the scene. The group is completed by keyboardist Kim Rantala (GIANT ROBOT, formerly of AMORPHIS).
