Welcome to Deadly Magic, a new project by Messerschmitt vocalist / guitarist Maik Jegszenties. While Messerschmitt reside on the classic thrash and speed metal spectrum, there is another musical passion for Maik: old US metal, particularly the more progressive end of it. Think early Queensrÿche, Sanctuary, Crimson Glory, Fates Warning, and Powerslave-era Iron Maiden…sound tempting? If so, then you need to hear …As Nightmares Gorged the Earth A-fucking-SAP!
For years, Maik was writing music that was different from Messerschmitt, but never attempted to bring it to life. As the world shut down in 2020, locations were forced to close and bands were forced to take a break; during this, Maik came up with an idea to start a little project. Some songs and many ideas lay around for several years, and finally the time had come to finish those pieces. Several circumstances delayed the whole project, and it took around a year to complete four songs and another year to record it. While Maik handled all songwriting as well as guitar and leads, joining him in Deadly Magic are Thorben Schulz on lead guitar, Yannic Zwinscher on bass, Daniel Behle on drums, and the extraordinary vocals of one Alexis Roy-Petit.
Totaling 24 incredibly epic minutes, …As Nightmares Gorged the Earth is an infinitely ascending spire of dark, alluring energy – and, indeed, Deadly Magic! With absurdly sharp execution, the quintet proceed to weave tales of high fantasy and grim allegory; you can nearly see the wizards and warriors across this sonic landscape. Each track is always moving, ever shifting, but with a path as crystal-clear as the production. Even when the chops reach a fever pitch of dazzling dizziness, there’s bountiful motifs and hooks to hang on to; the dynamic shading both provides breathing room and a deeper emotional center. Atop it all are the sorcerous vocals of Roy-Petit, who could be a dead ringer for both Bruce Dickinson and Geoff Tate circa 1984!
From bursting beginning to climatic conclusion, …As Nightmares Gorged the Earth remains a wholly engrossing journey, rendered with the passion & precision of classic progressive power metal. Deadly Magic has been cast!
