Rockshots Records is thrilled to unveil “The Serpent” the highly anticipated debut full-length album from Finnish progressive metal band Aitheer, scheduled for release on February 21st, 2025. Following the critically acclaimed 2020 “Sleeper” EP, “The Serpent” promises to be a transformative release for the band and the genre alike.
Formed in 2017 by Niko Löfman (vocals, guitars), Antton Kasslin (drums) and Roope Kytölä (bass), Aitheer initially captivated local audiences as a cover and jam project. Their evolution into original compositions has marked them as one of the most innovative acts in the progressive metal scene. “The Serpent” expands on the foundational sounds of “Sleeper,” taking listeners on a dynamic journey through a blend of progressive metal, rock, jazz, classical and ambient music.
The album was meticulously recorded, mixed and mastered by Harri Petjakko at Studio UG in Kerava, Finland, from August 2020 to January 2024. Niko Löfman’s role as the primary composer and visionary behind the album has ushered in a new era of sound for the band, characterized by a more theatrical and cinematic approach. The music touches on universal concepts and archetypes, evoking feelings of empowerment and introspection through a mix of dark, heavy atmospheres and softer, melancholic melodies.
Today also marks the release of the album’s first single and title track, “The Serpent” This song is a testament to the band’s experimental edge, featuring groovy, serpentine bass lines and the first use of Finnish lyrics in an Aitheer track. The song’s structure, while straightforward, incorporates a blend of psychedelic and cinematic elements that make it one of the most ambitious pieces in the band’s repertoire.
“The Serpent” album features a variety of standout tracks, including the dynamic “The Dance of Twins”, which seamlessly blends aggressive black metal with folk and progressive elements, culminating in an epic saxophone and guitar solo. The instrumental tracks like “Prologue”, “East”, and “Flame” showcase the band’s versatility, blending acoustic and ambient elements with classical influences, providing a contemplative contrast to the album’s more intense compositions.
Aitheer’s current lineup, including studio members such as session drummer Tuomo Ijäs and keyboardist Lassi Enqvist, brings a fresh dynamic to both the album and live performances. Their commitment to artistic freedom and experimentation promises a unique and evolving live show experience.
“The Serpent” is not just an album; it is a statement of intent from Aitheer, a bold step into new territories that challenges the conventions of metal and rock. It invites listeners to embark on a 32-minute journey through uncharted musical and emotional landscapes.
