After Thorn, we’ve got another fun and meaty death metal release – the debut album of the US death metal band Retching. It’s gnarly, pummeling, and catchy and has some terrific riffs strewn about in the songs which are a bit more intricately written than it might seem. We’ve just unveiled a brand new track to go along with the preorder which just went up. You can find it all on Bandcamp AT THIS LINK.
On only their debut release, Retching have found a way to present the gore-soaked, rotten, old school-inclined death metal sound that we all love with quality songwriting that elevates it beyond the nostalgic, aspiring bands of this ilk. It is what keeps the appeal from being diminished upon multiple listens and keeps the listener coming back for more as there’s more than just simplified caveman-mosh death metal savagery on offer here. The songs, while accessible and laden with compelling hooks, are intricate and structured, and do a lot more before offering the much-desired dose of primal brutality. The influences too are assimilated very well from various death metal bands – this is no direct Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation clone; it bears elements as most such death metal bands do, but they’ve attempted to go about creating something delectable and effective in their own way, and to that extent this works well. There’s no beating about the bush here – if you’re into death metal that’s heavy, catchy, and fun but also not completely senseless, Retching will make your day.
